What Happens to the Calls You Don’t Answer

You already know roughly how many calls you miss. Not the exact number — but you know it happens, because you have stood on a ladder with your phone buzzing in your pocket and no way to reach it.

Here is what makes garage doors different from most trades: the person calling you is rarely shopping.

A spring lets go on a Tuesday morning. The door is halfway down, the car is inside, and someone needs to get to work. That homeowner is not comparing three companies on price. They are searching on their phone and calling down the list until a human being picks up. The first person who answers gets the job — not because they were cheaper, and not because they were better, but because they answered.

Which means a missed call in this trade isn’t a delayed job. It’s a job that went to somebody else while you were under a door.

Where the calls actually go missing

Not where most people assume. It isn’t mainly the middle of the night.

It’s the two hours in the morning when you’re on the first job and the phone starts. It’s lunchtime. It’s the drive between calls. It’s Saturday, when a homeowner is finally home and looking at the door that’s been sticking for a month.

And it’s after hours — but that’s the smallest piece, not the biggest.

Voicemail isn’t coverage

Most companies think they’ve solved this with voicemail. They haven’t.

Go and count how many of your voicemails are from people who then called somebody else. You can’t, of course, which is exactly the problem. The homeowner who leaves a message and gets a call back four hours later has usually already booked. The ones who don’t leave a message never appear in your records at all — you have no idea they existed.

That’s the part that makes this hard to fix by trying harder. You cannot manage a number you can’t see.

What actually helps

There are only three real options, and you probably already know them.

Someone answers. An office person, a spouse, an answering service. Works well. Costs money, and a service that doesn’t know the trade will annoy your customers.

You call back faster. Helps. But you can’t call back from inside a garage with a spring under tension, and the moment that matters is the one you’re busy for.

Something answers for you and hands you the details. An AI receptionist picks up when you can’t, takes the name, the number, the address and what’s wrong, and passes it to you as a text before you’re off the job. It doesn’t sell anything. It stops the call from evaporating.

None of those is magic. What all three do is the same thing: turn an invisible loss into a visible list.

Start by finding out

Before you buy anything, get the number. Pull your call log for one ordinary week and count how many inbound calls went unanswered. Not a busy week, not a storm week — a normal one.

Most owners are surprised. Some are relieved. Either way, you now have a real number instead of a feeling, and every decision after that gets easier.

That’s the whole point. Fix what you can see.
